HORNS N METAL WE ARE MANY WE ARE LEGION NOT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE By: Jackie Ryan
WE ARE MANY WE ARE LEGION are a metal band that incorporates a brass section into their music. YES, horns and trumpets and all other brass instruments that they have brought to their sound. They say brass is heavy and should be part of metal music. They just introduced their first single LOST INSIDE, which is heavy and the brass instruments actually sound really good with the metal concept. I had a chance to reach out to them and ask a few questions about who they are and what they want to bring to the metal scene with brass.
TELL US WHO YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE ALL ABOUT.
WE ARE MANY WE ARE LEGION are the only metal band driven by a six-piece horn section. Imagine Sikth, Korn and Issues crashing a New Orleans second line parade and staying for the party. Were born because horns are heavy and short of the odd sax solo here and there it’s hard to find any metal bands utilizing the dirty rasp and groove of New Orleans style horns. We formed in the hope that others will follow and help create a whole new sub-genre of metal. Essentially, we went looking for something that we thought must already exist, didn’t find it so we created it. But we don’t want brass metal to stop with us hopefully we can inspire other bands to join the fray.
BRINGING IN A BRASS SECTION, HOW DO YOU THINK METAL FANS WILL UNDERSTAND YOUR MUSIC?
Since the very first germ of an idea for this band we worked hard to make the brass an integral part of the sound and not just an add on. This isn't a band that has some jazz metal leanings and features some horns here and there. Whilst there isn’t anything wrong with bands who spice things up with a ripping sax solo in the middle of tech metal track, we thought there was much more potential to use horns in a more integrated way. The way we approach things has always been with the view that New Orleans style horns are heavy already and horns and guitars playing metal riffs in unison sounds massive! If anything, we are taking brass fans out of their comfort zone and not metal fans! That said there probably isn't a music genre fan base that is more open to new things than metal fans!
WHAT WAS IT LIKE MAKING AND RELEASING YOUR FIRST MUSIC VIDEO FOR LOST INSIDE?
It was awesome, Lesley Anne Rose is an incredible animator and getting the chance to work with her was really exciting. The concept isn't an exact literal interpretation of the lyrics which makes for an interesting extra layer to things. Especially as at their core both are about psychological battles that we all face at some point. We are super happy with the video as its weird, dark and creepy, which suits us down to the ground.
I SEE ON YOUR SITE WWW.WEAREMANYWEARELEGION.COM THAT YOU ARE ASKING FOR DONATIONS TO BRING MORE MUSIC TO FANS. ARE YOU VENTURING OUT IN OTHER WAYS TO GET YOUR NAME AND SOUND OUT INTO THE METAL SCENE?
Absolutely, this is the birth of something that we think hasn't been done quite this way before. Don't get us wrong we love bands like Shining and the diablo swing orchestra who feature horns, but true brass metal doesn't exist so we wanted to make a splash with a debut song and top-notch music video. We have had some great radio play early on and blogs like yours have been incredibly supportive helping us spread the message that brass metal exists. Accepting donations at this early stage is also just a small way people who want to can help us fund the recording of more material and help us release our first collection of merch. We are an independent band, so whilst we hope people buy a copy of the Lost Inside single, we embrace the streaming culture that music exists in these days and every little thing helps, even a donation of a few dollars whilst we are in our embryonic stage. That said, a second single is already in the works and we are hard at work in the rehearsal room getting ready to take this many legged behemoth on the road.
HAVE YOU HAD A CHANCE TO PLAY ANY SETS FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY/FANS? WHAT IS THE ATMOSPHERE LIKE FOR EVERYONE?
Not yet, but you can rest assured that our live show will bring all of the party atmosphere from a night on Bourbon street (or Frenchmen street for the New Orleans connoisseurs) and all of the crushingly heavy pit action you can shake a windmill at!
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR YOUR FIRST ALBUM?
First album is pretty much written, but the plan is to release a second single, take our live show on the road and then set to work recording the album.
ANY ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF WE ARE MANY WE ARE LEGION?
We exist because metal with a 6-piece horn section doesn't exist. We came together as a band after going in search of this stuff and expecting it to already be out there. When it wasn't the only thing to do is create the music, you want to listen to. We absolutely are shocked that brass metal doesn't really exist outside of the odd sax solo here and there. So, our hope is that we can inspire more bands to follow us and create a whole new sub-genre of metal.
ANYTHING YOU WANT YOUR FRIENDS/FANS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
A little insight into our line-up for those who don’t know what a New Orleans horn section mixed with a metal band looks like. We have a drummer, two guitarists, bass player, two vocalists, two trumpets, two trombones, sax and last but definitely not least Sousaphone. If anyone isn’t familiar with a Sousaphone, quite simply they are the most bad ass looking instrument in existence!
