A EVENING WITH CROWBAR PROVIDENCE, RI SEPT 24, 2016 By: Stephanie Stevens
a last minute set up thanks to Mr. Todd Strange, to get into the CROWBAR show last night or I wouldn’t have been able to check it out; so I am very grateful and thankful to the band and Todd for the chance. To any metal fan who grew up on Sabbath and other great metal acts you know how incredible seeing a band like this in a small ass venue can be and tonight was no exception.
I remember seeing CROWBAR with Pantera probably in the early 90’s when the CROWBAR was just getting their feet wet in the scene. I remember it was at the Strand in Rhode Island and when we got to the venue the line to get in was wrapped around the block probably almost two times around. Just that sighting makes you think that one hell of a tour was in town for one night. CROWBAR took the stage that night and just destroyed that stage with the doomy, slow paced metal they play. well fast forwarded many years after and CROWBAR was back in Providence last night doing a headline show at the Ruins at the Colosseum.
a bunch of opening bands played before the mighty New Orleans CROWBAR hit the stage. The place had a decent crowd and it got mighty tight up front when the guys were getting ready to hit the stage. Kirk and Todd who started the band many years ago (1989 to be exact) had no fear of checking their own gear to get ready to rock the stage; so you know these guys after all the years of fame and success are still the most humble and talented of men. it was so great to also see Todd back with his friend and partner in crime Kirk to just define the roots and the real concept of what the band is all about. To round out the evening they have Tom Buckley a talented drummer who has been with them since 2005 and Matt Brunson who is pretty much the newest dude but has already been crafting his style with the band since 2009. Just like any album you put on from CROWBAR these guys bring the sound, the spirit and the “doom” from album to stage with ease and smoothness. The way the guys don’t need a gimmick or a fancy stage to make me and other metal fans stand in awe watching these guys just chug it out is astonishing. They use their instruments like the damn things are a part of them and the passion and love of their music and music in general just oozes from each one onstage. This is why they have and always will be the most influential metal band to come out of the New Orleans scene and the band that paved a path for other bands to be creative and bring that slow sludgy brooding and low keyed sound intertwined with fast and punky passages into metal music of today and yesterday. Over decades they have done this and the band still impresses and crushes every time I have seen them. I had a chance to make a small snippet video of the night with some cool moments and just some killer highlights of what us fans got a chance to witness last night.
If you have never gotten a CROWBAR experience in check out the bands facebook (www.facebook.com/crowbarmusic) and see when they will be in your area. The band is also working on new material and have released a new track entitled FALLING WHILE RISING which is letting the world these “old dog’s” still have a ton of gas in the tank so get ready for them unleashing THE SERPENT ONLY LIES, on October 28, 2016 via Entertainment One (eOne) in North America and via SPV overseas. As the guys stated CROWBAR at its finest... HEAVIER THAN EVER!!!"
