SPARZANZA--ANNOUNCING THE END Despotz Records BY: JJ King
Swedish powerhouses SPARZANZA have released their latest album “ANNOUNCING THE END” (very fittingly) on Friday the 13th of October, 2017. This band has been around since 1996, and has previously released seven albums, yet they still manage to straight CRUSH it with album number eight. From beginning to end, “ANNOUNCING THE END” is a very badass, ear catching album. It’s a very Hard Rock based album, but also embraces different elements from metal, blues, and even southern styled metal (“THE TRIGGER” in particular), making it a very solid release. Fans of Pantera, Godsmack, and Stone Sour will certainly all get something out of this one.
They start off the album with the title track “ANNOUNCING THE END”, gradually bringing in the song with very epic, even haunting sounding backing tracks before the full band kicks in. This is one of the songs you can definitely hear a touch of Stone Sour influence with the very laid-back verse backed by a nice tribal sounding drum beat, and topped off with very soft but intriguing lead vocals. My favorite part of this song is probably the pre-chorus, where the vocalist screams “Help!” on every other beat of each measure…it just does an excellent job of amping you up for the chorus, which I love.
Track three, “WHATEVER COME MAY BE” is one of my top three favorites off of “ANNOUNCING THE END” for sure. It’s one of the more laid-back tracks, but the chorus is SUPER catchy, and the lyrics are just amazing and relatable while getting you a little pumped. I have to share the lyrics from the chorus, because they’re just so good: “Whatever come may be This is our fate, our destiny Whatever life may bring Just close your eyes and count to ten When the night is coming to stay And death is on its way Whatever come may be This is our destiny” Combined with the incredible whistle intro to the song, the gradual build of the song from the verse to the chorus, and very heart wrenching way that vocalist Fredrik Weileby sings the song, it makes for one Hell of a track.
The fourth song on this album, “VINDICATION” is a straight up rocker, right from the get-go. It’s upbeat, it’s catchy, it has a great mix of clean and screaming vocals; essentially, it’s an excellent fist pumping song with (as usual) great lyrics. SPARZANZA actually has a badass music video out for this one, it’s haunting and just amazing. After the second chorus, the song breaks down for a little bit, then goes into a nice little guitar solo section, then…the song gets real low, and builds its way back up perfectly. That’s one thing I really need to credit SPARZANZA on, they are SO good at getting dynamic with their music. They build the song up, bring it down, and then build back up for the end of the song. And in cases like this particular song, the band ends it with some haunting, almost ambient sounding guitars.
I really can’t talk about “ANNOUNCING THE END” enough, there are so many strong songs on this album, and overall, it’s just so well written. That’s where you can tell that SPARZANZA has quite a few years behind them, because they’ve essentially perfected the writing process. They know how to draw a listener in, and more importantly how to KEEP that listener interested. Every track is so good so it’s hard to narrow it down to one favorite, but my top three are probably going to be “VINDICATION”, “WHATEVER COME MAY BE”, and “THE DARK APPEAL”. Check out SPARZANZA on Facebook, and go listen to their new album on Spotify! Keep your eyes and ears open for more from these guys, I for one am curious to see what comes next.
