SCREAMING FOR SILENCE
Do you believe you can gain an incredible fan base, play tons of festivals with rock icons, win the Ernie Ball 2015 battle of the bands and release some incredible music without being signed to a label? Well, just ask the Omaha, NE band SCREAMING FOR SILENCE. They have obtained quite a fan base of rock fans with the national touring they have done, social media pumping them up (that’s how I found out about them) and just all out good rock music and a band being real and genuine in the music really makes a difference these days. Being on a label is an accomplishment but you can make it happen on your own if you’re ready to work it and commit to a life of rock n roll. They combine the solid melodic rock trances with some hard hitting beats to make the music stand out over some other great bands.
The guys have released a single entitled THE KING IS CROWNED and by hitting play and hearing the hard hitting rock and aggressive breakdowns you know this band is committed to making memorable and hard rocking tunes. If they bring that energy to the stage then it’s going to be an unforgettable stage show, worth checking out if they come to your town. I am going to have the chance later in April to see these guys in Rhode island and meet then to see in a more up close way how these guys kill It onstage and get to meet the creative minds that make up SCREAMING FOR SILENCE, but for now I had the chance to talk to vocalist Zeb Christensen about the new album, touring life and video making!
DEFINE SCREAMING FOR SILENCE THROUGH A MOVIE TITLE?
I mean I think we have to go with one of the greatest movies of all time "Varsity Blues". I think it relates to us because we stand up for what we believe in. Even being the underdog we go in every night and give it our all and let our music and actions do the talking. Plus, we are like best friends with James Van Der Beek. He commented on our Instagram once.
I FOUND YOUR 2012 EP RELEASE RELENTLESS AND WAS CURIOUS WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE EDDIE $$$ TRACK?
We just thought it would be really cool to take an older song like that and put a little new age twist on it. I remember when we used to go to bars and that song would come on EVERYONE would know the words whether you loved it or hated it. It's pretty cool to see the crowd reaction when we play it. Now it's kind of become a crowd favorite across the country.
SAW YOU HAD A REVOLVING DOOR OF BASS PLAYERS, NOW IN 2016 HAVE YOU GOTTEN A PERMANENT BASS PLAYER, AND WAS THERE A PARTICULAR TYPE OF BASS PLAYER YOU WANTED OR JUST NOT GETTING THE RIGHT FIT OR PERSONALITY FOR THE GROUP?
In the end you have to spend every day and night with the people you are on the road with. If you don't get along it makes it tough. We have a great team and way of doing things that takes so much teamwork. Also people think that being on the road is easy. It doesn't take long for people to find out that it can get tough out there. Right now I feel like we are as close as we have ever been. Our chemistry is amazing and it shows on stage. We are the tightest we have ever been as a band.
2015 HAD YOU GUYS WINNING THE ERNIE BALL BATTLE OF THE BANDS, PLAYING THE ROCK ON THE RANGE FESTIVALS AND MANY OTHER HUGE FESTIVALS. HOW DID THIS PAST YEAR HELP YOU GUYS IN LEARNING THE ROCK INDUSTRY AND HELP THE BAND OVERALL?
This last year was so much fun. The Ernie Ball thing was crazy. For someone like the people of Ernie Ball to pick us out of 2,000 bands was such an awesome feeling. It makes you feel like you are doing something right. The experience was one we will never forget! Festivals overall are a blast. Getting to share the stage and hang with so many bands that we are fans of is cool. There's nothing that beats loud music, the sun and few cold beers.
YOU GUYS WRITE ON THE ROAD A LOT? SOME BANDS I HAVE CHATTED WITH SAY THEY DON’T LIKE IT JUST WONDERING HOW THE PROCESS IS FOR YOU GUYS DURING ROAD LIFE AND WRITING? ALSO WHEN YOU GET HOME OR IN THE STUDIO IS THERE A LOT OF REDEFINING TRACKS OR SCRAPPING THEM?
We are always coming up with new ideas on the road or while we're at home. When we are home we try to put those ideas to life and build off of it. Writing is the fun and creative part about being in a band. So we love to keep growing and coming up with new music.
THE NEW ALBUM WHICH IS A SELF TITLED DEBUT FULL LENGTH IS OUT TELL ME ABOUT THE MATURITY IN SOUND AND WHAT YOU GUYS FEEL YOU HAVE PROGRESSED ON GETTING TIGHTER WITH EITHER IN SONGWRITING, STUDIO EXPERIENCE?
We spent a lot of time on the road while we were coming up with ideas for this album. We learned so much and grew so much as a band that we couldn't wait to get in the studio for this album. Also working with Erik Ron was awesome. I felt like our chemistry with him was really good right off the bat. We learned so much from him and learned a lot about who we are as a band. We can't wait to get back in the studio and make some new ideas come to life!
WHAT IS THE NEWS ON SIGNING WITH A LABEL? ARE YOU HAPPY BEING A DIY BAND OR ARE U IN THE WORKS OF SIGNING?
Right now we are focusing on new music. We have an awesome management team that we are working with. We're just excited to really get the ball rolling with them. If a label comes along that's cool but it’s also nice to see the progress being a DIY band. We really have our fans to thank for keeping us going!
WHAT WAS THE CHOICE IN CHOOSING THE KING IS CROWNED AS A SINGLE AND VIDEO? WHAT WAS THE VISION ON THE VIDEO AND DO YOU FEEL IT CAME OUT AS YOU ENVISIONED AND WAS THERE ANY FUNNY STORIES ON THE VIDEO SET?
We felt like that song was a great fit for radio and to really set the tone for the release of our album. Shooting the video was super fun. There was a huge storm that day but our fans from Omaha still showed up in full force to shoot it. The funny part was that the Joslyn Castle is a very prestigious place in Omaha with a lot of history. I think they were a little worried about us trashing the place. The only thing we got in trouble for was someone crowd surfing. So we had to stop that but not before we got a great shot that you see in the video haha.
HOW HAS RADIO TAKEN TO YOU GUYS? WOULD YOU EVER WRITE TO MAKE IT TO RADIO FRIENDLY OR DO YOU FEEL IN THIS DAY N AGE RADIO HAS BEEN MORE OPEN MINDED?
We have had a little radio success so far. With this day and age radio has been a little more open minded which is good for bands like us that can have a heavier feel to the music. We look forward to people hearing new music and what they will think of it. If it fits radio so be it.
ALWAYS LOVE ASKING ABOUT SLOWER OR BALLADS ON DISC AND YOU GUYS HAVE CUTTING TIES, TELL ME HOW THIS SONG CAME TO LIFE AND HAVE YOU RELEASED THIS AS A NEW SINGLE?
We haven't released it as a single. It would probably be the third one we would release as a single right now. The song was written about past relationships and about not changing who you are to make the relationship work. If you are in a relationship you should accept that person as who they are. I love hearing when people say they connect with a song. That seems to be one people really connect with when they listen to the album.
WHAT’S THE TOUR LIFE LOOKING LIKE FOR YOU GUYS IN 2016?
We'll be touring through the summer until we get back in the studio, We don't like to take much time off of the road so it won't take us long to get back out there with new music.
HOW MANY HAIR COLORS HAS YOUR GUITAR PLAYER HAD AND IS HE THE ONE THAT TAKES THE LONGEST TO GET READY FOR THE STAGE?
HAHA He has been through quite the variety. Casey actually has the process down to make it very fast. It really only takes him about 5 minutes or so. We have been telling him he needs to make a "how-to" video on how he does it!
THE SILLIEST MEMBER ON THE ROAD?
Easily our drummer Matt Tatroe. He's a real treat.
THE MOST RESPONSIBLE BAND MEMBER ON THE ROAD?
That's a tough one. Danny our guitarist is probably the most responsible. He handles a lot for us!
WHEN ITS ALL SAID N DONE WHAT DO YOU WANT SCREAMING FOR SILENCE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR?
We just want to be remembered as being "real". We don't have any tricks up our sleeve. We bring a raw energy every single night that I think is genuine. If It's in front of 10 or 10,000 people we bring it the same. We owe that to all of our fans.
