ON YOUR DEATHBED success is brewing for these Massachusetts natives.
ON YOUR DEATHEBED is based out of Taunton, MA and came together back in 2013. I am proud to say I have known some of these guys since we were teenagers in the local scene. I have watched these guys grow into men and progress with their musical careers, especially the one and only Bob Mendell, vocalist and songwriter of ON YOUR DEATHBED.
The one thing is that this band is probably the best I have seen them perform along with write probably some of the best shit out of their career and to see the band building a fanbase getting known and respected in the scene just makes me feel like a proud mama in some senses.
ON YOUR DEATHBED pretty much is summed up musically as a combination of aggressive metal, hardcore additives and tons of melodic tones that just makes the band a very diverse and attention getting to music fans of all genres.
The band released a EP a while back and is one disc that can be listened to from start to finish because he song vibes together but has new elements to really bring you on an adventure and the sound quality is like killer, pretty professional to say the least. The self-titled EP has the hardcore feel with WE GIVE which is also a live show favorite, CAN’T TAKE AWAY brings the melody and catchy sing a long vibe to the band’s sound, EVERYTHING TO ME blends melody and a more rock/harder edge feel to it and UNIFIED just brings the groove to the forefront. This band just creates diversity and in this day and age that’s what you want a band to be, well rounded and killer live and you get the whole package with ON YOUR DEATHBED.
I had a chance to throw out some questions to my friend and vocalist Bob Mendell about the band members, up n coming shows, the EP and future music and who inspires him.
YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN ON THE SCENE FOR A BIT NOW BUT SEEMS LIKE YOU SOLIDIFIED A GOOD TIGHT SQUAD OF BAND MEMBERS NOW. WHO’S IN THE BAND AND WHAT DOES EACH OF THEM BRING TO THE TABLE. INCLUDING YOURSELF?
Well there's Caz Gadles on lead/ rhythm guitar he's one of the main song writers. He has a great intensity live too. James Healy is also on lead/ rhythm he's brought another layer to the music with some great playing. Mike Creature is on bass keeping the low end nice, full and in your face. Mike Geoffrion on drums is a brutal hard-hitting timekeeper that has a great ear for song arrangement. Lastly myself, Bob Mendell, on vocals. I try to keep the lyrics and vocal melodies and patterns as good as these guy's awesome music. We also all bring the live show and try to give the crowd a good show every time. If it's 20 or 20,000 we want them you remember our show.
WHERE DID THE NAME ON YOUR DEATHBED COME FROM?
The name ON YOUR DEATHBED actually is from lyrics to a song by a hardcore band called 108. The song is called Deathbed from the record Song of Separation. If you haven't heard of them they're an amazing band. Very metal influenced Hare Krishna hardcore. Love them.
FOR SOMEONE THAT HASN’T HEARD ON YOUR DEATHBED WHAT CAN YOU TELL THE WORLD ABOUT YOUR SOUND AND YOUR OVERALL GOALS AS A BAND?
Well we're a melodic metal band with hardcore influences. We like to keep evolving and trying new things, but also want to keep within the same niche, if that makes sense. We want to keep growing and keep pushing this band as far as it can go. We also pride ourselves in an entertaining live show with lots of energy. We're definitely a band that loves to perform.
IN A LYRICAL OUTLOOK WHERE DO YOU GUYS GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM AND IS THERE ANY TOPIC YOU WOULD NEVER WRITE ABOUT?
Most of my inspiration is from my life experiences whether good or bad. I try to write from a certain perspective but also keep it open to interpretation. I like people being able to connect with the words and relate to something they feel. I don't think there's really anything I wouldn't write about, I just would have my own side on the subject.
YOUR EP HAS BEEN OUT FOR A LITTLE BIT NOW DO YOU HAVE NEW MUSIC IN THE MAKING AND CAN WE POSSIBLE SEE ANOTHER EP OR A FULL-LENGTH FROM YOU GUYS SOON?
We're very happy with our first EP. Our engineer for the recording, Dave Allen, is a genius and we love how great it sounds. We've gotten a lot of positive reviews and radio play. We couldn't be prouder. We actually have a whole records worth of songs ready to record. We're just weighing our options right now as to how to get them recorded. We'd love to do a full length next but with the way the music is being consumed by the public now it's seems EPs are the way to go. So, we'll see.
WHICH FAMOUS MUSICIANS HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM?
Myself personally I have always looked up to Mike Patton from Faith No More. He's always been an inspiration for me. His versatility is second to none. More recently Jesse Leach from Killswitch Engage. He's always been an amazing vocalist and frontman. He's also an awesome person and friend.
IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS YOU GUYS HAVE PLAYED SOME KILLER SHOWS WHAT IN YOUR MIND HAS BEEN THE BEST AS IN PLAYING WITH CERTAIN BANDS AND WHICH SHOW DO YOU THINK YOU GAINED THE MOST FAN EXPOSURE AT (IN GETTING NEW FANS”)?
Well we just played the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival for the second year in a row. We also have done some other amazing shows supporting some of the biggest bands in some amazing venues all over the area. So honestly, I just feel getting us out there and not being closed minded to what types of bands we play with has definitely helped our audience grow.
HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN LOOKING INTO GETTING LABEL INTEREST OR DO YOU FEEL DOING THE DIY WAY IS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR YOU IN THE LONG HAUL?
Well we'd love to find a label that would like to work with us whether it's just starting out with distribution of what we have already or with putting out something new. We have been talking to some so that's definitely a possibility. That being said, we aren't going to expect anything like that. We have no problem working hard to get the music out on our own. We just want people to hear what we have to offer and want to put in the best show we can.
DO YOU THINK THAT ONLINE PRESENCE IS IMPORTANT FOR FANS TO FIND YOU AND CRITICS TO FIND YOUR MUSIC TO WRITE ABOUT?
Absolutely!!! The internet is a major tool for people to find new music, or in turn find a fan base. Through social media, media steaming or purchasing sites. All of that is a huge part of how some artists are even known in the first place.
WHAT SONG BEST DESCRIBES YOUR BANDS WORK ETHIC?
Everything to Me. It's a song about having passion in what you do. In our case that passion is playing and performing music.
IMAGINE YOU’RE WATCHING A CONCERT AND ONE OF THE BAND MEMBERS SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTS. YOU GET CALLED TO THE STAGE TO REPLACE THAT BAND MEMBER. WHO’S THE BAND?
Mike Patton in Faith No More of course.
