OCTALUX CHATS IT UP WITH THE ROMPER ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM AND FUTURE HAPPENINGS BY: Jackie Ryan
When I heard that this band was from Lexington, KY, I got super excited. There aren’t that many good bands that come out of here and I was pumped to listen to the music and come up with questions to ask them. It was a little hard to find information on them, but I could do some digging and found out that they have been around since 1999 and have been rocking out with different members and record labels to get their name out into the scene. OCTALUX has won many awards including “Fearshop band of the month and CD of the year in 2005.
BRANDON HURLEY was nice enough to send over their latest album, ATOMIC, for THE ROMPER to review. They have hard-hitting drums and electric guitars that you don’t hear very often in the formation that they chose. I think the instrumentals are great, but I’m not a big fan on the lyrics and vocals, however some fans of rock would love these guys. ATOMIC starts off with LAY DOWN THE LAW, and it starts off with a kick, rocking it out right off the bat. They bring in different eras of rock music to this song and have a guitar solo in the middle of the song and not too many lyrics to bring it more to life.
SALLOW is my favorite on this album, it is upbeat and very danceable. The song talks about wanting someone to stay by your side and how much that person means to you. There is another guitar solo, but it works for this song and gives it a little something extra with the electric riffs. SILVERZERO is another decent song, rocking it out with the heavy bass and hard-hitting drums that slow down towards the end and pick back up with another guitar solo (but is accompanied by the drums). MY BEAUTIFUL is another danceable song that has more bass presence.
NOTHING HURTS QUITE LIKE GOODBYE starts off like one the BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE songs and it was very nice to hear, because I am a huge fan of theirs. The vocals are pleasing to the ear and bring the song to a whole new place for me. The guitar riffs really bring out the musical talent of HURLEY and TONY. NO ONE WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER starts off sounding like something that should come out of the 80’s/90’s era.
WHAT DOES YOUR NEW ALBUM ATOMIC HAVE THAT YOUR OTHERS DON'T? A sense of urgency and a real driving nature while balanced with enough space to catch your breath
YOU HAVE BEEN TOGETHER SINCE 1999 AND COME OUT WITH A BUNCH OF ALBUMS (SOME THAT HAVEN'T BEEN RELEASED) WOULD YOU LIKE TO RELEASE THOSE TO YOUR FANS ANYTIME SOON? In various forms, all our albums have been released, as for streaming services, yes, we'd like all our albums to be available. We are currently working on our own internet radio station to be launched soon streaming all of our music so people who may want to check out our other albums can or for those who have lost their copies
WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM FOR YOUR SONGS/ALBUMS? Inspiration comes from seeing too many people afraid to chase their dreams or just quit when the going gets too tough. It also comes from injustice between human interactions, someone exploiting the emotions of another we find very problematic and only adds to the chaos. We try to give the fans a sense of belonging, like they're not alone when down and to show them that bouncing back from heartbreak is 100% possible
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO TOUR WITH AND WHERE LIKE TO GO? KISS, Highly Suspect, Big Jesus, Metallica the list goes on and on, rock'n'roll has been around for so long now and older bands still play tons of shows that any band that would have us we'd love to embrace their fans and see if their fans would take to us. As far as where? Anywhere that high energy rock is appreciated and wanted, be it a huge city or a place that doesn't get a lot of bands. We want our shows to be an experience for all who attend and maybe spark something in a fan that would lead them to say "man, I gotta do THAT!!"
OCTALUX HAS WON A TON OF AWARDS, WHICH ONES ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
We have and they're nice, but honestly, as cool as it is to be recognized for something, we love the fact that ppl dig what we do and appreciate the effort we put in to making great songs and shows that wear us out and the fans out as well, nothing like a good rock'n'roll sweat!
WHAT ARE YOUR ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF OCTALUX?
The future? To get known to the world at large, a household name? That'd be great, but we'd just like to have a good reputation and for people dig us for what we do
