HOGAN'S GOAT; MAKING SOUTHERN METAL BUZZ IN THE ROCK WORLD
BY: Stephanie Stevens
The buzz for the southern metal outfit HOGAN’S GOAT is growing day by day and it’s not astonishing since the band’s debut self-titled album is everything from groove, headbanging and ass kicking. The guys have a feel of a combination of SoundGarden, Alice In Chains and Mastodon embellished with the unique and fabulous vocal appeal of John Salmon this band is going to be climbing the rock status ladder in no time.
Still an unsigned band the guys got their start playing their first show (at SXSW, on the rooftop of The Blind Pig) was part of an all Nashville (non-country) showcase. Soon after, HOGAN’S GOAT returned to Nashville, competed in BMI's "Road To Bonnaroo" (winning the fan vote) and played many other shows around the Nashville area.
Now the band is gearing up to release the self-titled debut July 18th with ass kicking tracks like the headbanging JOE DOE, the southern metal appeal of RAT BOY, and my favorite groove oriented, hard rocking OVER THE PALISADE these guys have a crisp, infectious sound to them. If you’re interested before the date of the release to check out the buzz on these boys both their singles SHIT KICKER and PENNYMADE and on Spotify, so head over and take a listen. I had a chance to throw out some questions for the release date.
INTRODUCE YOUR BAND AND THE HISTORY OF HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER?
We’re HOGAN’S GOAT, and we’re from all over the place. We are based in Nashville, but 4 of 5 of us are from Montana, Texas, and North Carolina. The band was formed a month before our first show, which was an all Nashville non-country showcase at SXSW.
HOW HAS NASHVILLE INFLUENCED OR INSPIRED YOUR BAND?
All the bands here are so talented, it holds us to a higher expectation. It can be very cutthroat.
COLLECTIVELY DOES THE BAND HAVE THE SAME MUSICAL INFLUENCES IF SO WHO ARE THEY AND IF NOT, WHO IS EACH ONE OF YOUR MAJOR MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS?
I’d hate to give the same answer we always give, but it’s all over the board. Everything from Guns N’ Roses to Mastodon. Sprinkle in a little Brooks N’ Dunn, maybe some Jewel, and a little bit of The Cult. Shout out to my man, Stevie Wonder.
YOUR BAND NAME IS INTERESTING WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND IT AND HOW DOES IT ADAPT TO WHAT YOUR BAND IS ABOUT?
The story of HOGAN’S GOAT is old folklore. This farmer, Hogan, had a goat that was the worst looking, smelling, deformed creature… You could smell it miles away. Our name is strange, as are we. We are against the grain, and don’t really want to fit in. We just want to make good music, and keep the ball rollin’. We’re about a good time.
DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND AND WHAT IMAGE DO YOU THINK YOUR MUSIC CONVEYS?
I think a lot of our songs are pretty diverse. It depends on what you listen to.
YOU ARE RELEASING VERY SOON YOUR SELF-TITLED DEBUT DISC HOW DO YOU VIEW THE OVERALL FINISHED PRODUCT AND YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT OF THE ALBUM?
We’re all really proud of the music we’ve written. We’d like to thank our art designer Garrett Derossett, and original artist Andy Gregg. The finished physical product is sick!
Our proudest moment will be July 18th when this sucker is out!
YOU SELF-PRODUCED THE DISC TOO WAS THERE A REASON BEHIND THAT AND WILL THAT BE A CONTINUATION WITH EACH ALBUM YOU RELEASE?
There are a few producers that we’d like to work with... That’s not really something we planned. This album just kind of manifested that way. Not sure what will happen, but we won’t shy away from working with other producers.
BEING STILL AN UNSIGNED BAND ARE YOU GUYS LOOKING TO STAY DIY OR ARE U SHOPPING LABELS?
I think we’re pretty open as long it makes sense for both parties. We’ll see what happens.
YOUR SINGLE SHIT KICKER HAS A PROMINENT TITLE. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS SONG FOR THE PLATFORM SINGLE FOR THE ALBUM AND WHAT DOES THE SONG MEAN TO YOU?
To us it was important to put our best SHIT KICKIN’ foot forward. The song was written as an homage to Billings, MT. Wayne and Donovan are both from there. Something about that city... it has a very stand your ground feel to it.
HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR LIVE SHOW PERFORMANCE ABILITY AND HOW IMPORTANT IS THE VISUAL AND ENERGY OF YOUR BAND MEMBERS FOR YOUR MUSIC AND SET?
Our main goal is and will continue to be to get on the road to play. This element is extremely important to us, and we rehearse quite a bit. Our visual will continue to improve, but it’s all about getting out there and fuckin’ doing it. The rest will come. As long as our music translates well from the album to the stage (which we have heavily prioritized) we will be locked and loaded.
TOURS/SHOWS COMING UP YOU WANT TO PROMOTE?
Our album release show is coming up on July 18th at The High Watt here in Nashville, TN. Working on putting together our fall/winter tour now.
