EVEN THE DEAD LOVE A PARADE GUITARIST MATT RAFFAELE TALKS SHOP TO THE ROMPER
BY: STEPHANIE STEVENS
If the music doesn’t catch your attention, then maybe a name like EVEN THE DEAD LOVE A PARADE will make you stand up and take notice!
ETDLAP is a metal band from Dallas, Texas. The band began life when Braxton Henry (guitar) and Clint Litton (drums) decided they wanted to dust the cobwebs off their metal roots and supply some new carnage to the metal world.
The best piece of the story is how the guys created the band while road crewing for DROWNING POOL! Countless hours between shows and with miles traveled; the fire was lit and DP’s bassist Stevie Benton jumped aboard to help create the bass line for the the crushing riffs, huge drums and in your face vocals. With the need of just a few essential members left to fill out the band----pretty quickly arrived Matt Raffaele on guitar and Jordan Condrey beating on vocals and lyrically mindfucking us with illusions of insanity, the beginning of life became for EVEN THE DEAD LOVE A PARADE.
Recently the band signed with EMP label group and a digital EP is set for release May 13. Before this metal is set free I had a chance to throw some questions to guitarist Matt Raffaele about the bands new video for HEART POACHER, testing Gods patience and if qualities of Drowning Pool fall in the mix of creation when writing for ETDLAP!
WHAT WAS THE CONVERSATIONS LEADING UP TO THE SIGNING WITH EMP AND HOW ARE YOU GUYS
FEELING THESE DAYS BEING BACK BY A GOOD LABEL?
MATT: It was quick – we got on the phone with Dave Ellefson and Thom Hazaert and the team @ EMP and talked about music and what we were looking for and what we were looking to do, we pretty much wanted to be on a true metal label - EMP came strong to the party - and we had a deal done in a matter of days.
IN MAY YOU ARE RELEASING A DIGITAL EP, HOW HAS THE MUSIC CHANGED FROM OLDER MUSIC COMPARED ON WHAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN FOR THIS EP?
MATT: We actually wrote the songs on this EP a while ago. We re-recorded them at Brax’s studio here in Dallas and Jordan went to Atlanta to record the vocals with Corey Lowery (Saint Asonia, Eye Empire, Dark New Day.) Once we finished recording we got word that TOM BAKER was going to master the record. Toms list of credits is silly – Manson, Sevendust, NIN, Rob Zombie, AX7, Beastie Boys - it was a no brainer and the final product is amazing
SINCE ITS DIGITAL IS THAT THE WAY YOUR ALBUMS WILL BE RELEASED NOW OR ARE YOU STILL GOING TO HAVE CDS OUT?
MATT: For the full length we definitely will - I am a purist and for you folks who still want to hold the DISC an read the lyrics (which is huge for us) we want to have that available.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE INTERNET AND HOW IN THIS DAY AND AGE IT SEEMS LIKE CDS ARE A
THING OF THE PAST? HOW CAN BANDS STILL MAKE MONEY OFF IT?
MATT: Artists have been born and laid to rest at the hands of the all mighty google. It’s awesome that folks can get exposed to new music – but artists are finding it hard to make a buck - …
YOUR MUSIC IS VERY AGGRESSIVE COMPARED TO SOMETHING THAT DROWNING POOL WOULD DO, HOW EXCITED IS STEVIE TO BE WRITING IN A DIFFERENT REALM, AND DOES SOME QUALITIES OF DROWNING POOL EVER FALL IN THE MIX WHILE WRITING?
MATT: Man that dudes pants go crazy for this band - JK- we are far different than DP - but at the same time we have all worked for DP and traveled all over the world working for them – that being said it would be a lie to say I wasn’t influenced by DP’s music. They are the epitome of perseverance – so mad props to them but in the end we do our own thing -
EVEN THE DEAD LOVE A PARADE, WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE BAND NAME? WHO CAME UP WITH IT?
MATT: BRAXTON AND CLINT - BACK LOUNGE – DROWNING POOL BUS - It came from a C-rate movie – I
can’t take credit for it - but damn I think it’s great!
I READ ON YOUR BIO YOU ARE “TESTING GODS PATIENCE” WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT AND WHAT LYRICALLY DO YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON IN YOUR MUSIC FOR THE MOST PART?
MATT: Jordon is the lyrical mastermind – he and I are obsessed with Serial killers and mass murder shit. you’ll find most of the lyrics are genius yet terrifying -- testing Gods patience is us pushing the envelope – He’s (Jordan) truly the lyrical boogieman -
YOUR VIDEO FOR HEART POACHER IS A MOVIE LIKE VIDEO WHO CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT AND
VISUAL DISPLAY OF THE VIDEO?
MATT: We did that vid as well as the vid for FROM SEX TAPES TO SNUFF FILMS completely DIY - Just went for it with the help of some friends. We love the grindhouse look – grainy fight club-ish style - we aren’t pretty and neither are our videos
HOW MUCH EXPLANATION DO YOU WANT TO GIVE FANS TO YOUR LYRICS? DO YOU WANT THEM TO
CAPTURE THEIR OWN OUTCOME OF WHAT THE SONGS MEAN TO THEM?
MATT: Me personally - I want fans to enjoy the songs – take what you want from them – music moves people in different ways depending on the individual listener -
WHATS TOURING LOOKING LIKE FOR YOU GUYS IN 2016 AND HOW WILL THAT AFFECT DROWNING
POOL IF AT ALL?
MATT: DP has a new record out – we will be writing our full length as well as cherry picking
some shows. Since we are all industry guys we aim to tour smart - doing what’s best for the band in
terms of reaching as many folks as possible
MATT: Thanks so much for helping us get the word out about our band, We are truly grateful for giving our band a listen and the platform to tell our story – GO DOWNLOAD THE RECORD ON MAY 13TH AT EMP-LABEL-GROUP. http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/drowning-pool-bassists-even-the-dead-love-a-parade-signs-with-emp-label-group/.
