EMBRACE THE DAWN-- THE EFFIGIST Release date: November 3rd, 2017 BY: JJ KING
Complete with blazing double bass, brutal vocals that rival that of a demon, and melodically shredding guitar parts, EMBRACE THE DAWN’S first full-length album “THE EFFIGIST” (out November 3rd) is something all Progressive Death Metal fans will get something out of. Following their debut EP from two years ago, this new release features a brand-new powerhouse of a lineup from all around the globe. Joining the band’s founder Ben Tinker (Australia) on guitar is; Denis Landry (Canada) on the bass, Kevin Talley (USA) on drums, and Roger Isaksen (Norway) coming in on the vocals. “THE EFFIGIST” is one Hell of a way to bring in the new lineup, showing off everyone’s abilities.
Starting off the album is my personal favorite, “COLD BLACK HOLE”. I love it when bands start off a song with some beautiful clean guitar riff, then gradually bring in the rest of the band with sporadic accents from the drums and rhythm guitar together before throwing in some vocals, then slamming in together with the full group. Once the song really kicks in, it KICKS in, coming right out of the gate with blazing drums and a killer upbeat tempo. Now my two favorite parts of this song are the different melodic guitar riffs thrown in throughout the chorus and bridge parts, and the incredible vocal hook during the chorus. Unfortunately, I’ve heard too many Progressive Death Metal bands lack hook in the vocal parts, but Roget Isaksen really delivers on this one, showing off not only his vocal ability, but his writing ability as well.
I want to talk about another favorite of mine that I believe to be one of the stronger songs off of “THE EFFIGIST”, entitled “THE TIDE”. While it goes about it differently, this track also has a gradual intro, building the anticipation for what’s to come. Unlike “COLD BLACK HOLE” though, the primary parts of “THE TIDE” employ a sick half-time groove that (in my opinion) really helps to bring the power. I’m all for upbeat songs, but there’s just something about those badass half-time parts that really get me banging my head and wanting to throw down, which thankfully this song is full of. Don’t let the phrase “half-time” give you the wrong idea, because guitarist Ben Tinker does all kinds of shredding and impressive melodic riffs over the top of everything, really just tying it all together.
I’m going to get into just one more song before I wrap this up; “LADY SNOWBLOOD”. Right off the bat this track starts off with a tasty little guitar riff that will surely have fellow musicians/guitarists geeking out. To me it’s one of the more progressive/diverse songs, showcasing odd time signatures, funky drum break downs, and even some Symphonic Metal elements (which really brings it together for me). I am personally a big fan of Symphonic bits and pieces thrown into heavier metal songs, it just makes it have such an “epic” sound to it.
If you love Progressive, Technical, Death, Symphonic, or even Black Metal, you should definitely go grab a copy of EMBRACE THE DAWN’s newest release “THE EFFIGIST” when it comes out this Friday November 3rd!
