DEAD GIRLS DON’T SAY NO--KINGDOM OF DECAY Reverbnation Records
What do you think of when you hear someone say death metal/ thrash? The members of DEAD GIRLS DON’T SAY NO know exactly what the sound should be with their new album release of KINGDOM OF DECAY. I had the chance to take a listen to some of their album that hit sound waves in January of this year. They were a four-piece from 2012 till about 2016 when they added vocalist ALYSON HELL. They are very harsh with their music and vocals of JOSH MCLAUGHLIN and JIM ADAMS, on the album, are cut-throat and somewhat mesmerizing.
HATE is hard-hitting and electrifying in sound. The lyrics show some intense direction of what they want their fans to get out of the music. VISIONS OF DEATH start off with intense drumming, which you hear throughout the song. They play and stop and play and stop at just the right moments to bring the listener into the song. KINGDOM OF DEACAY is a slower song for them, but still has that same intenseness as the rest of the songs. They bring in more guitars that rock out through this song and the lyrics are interesting with lines like “your corpse will decorate my kingdom of decay” And “Severed limbs hang from trees.” What I get from this is that they don’t want to be the one of many, but want to stand out and be known to the world.
I had the chance to ask DGDSN some questions about their future how they formed and how they feel about having a full album out with a new vocalist. If you’re in the Providence area, check these guys out! WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/DGDSN www.reverbnation.com/deadgirlsdontsayno5
WHO IS IN YOUR BAND AND WHAT DO THEY PLAY AND DESCRIBE THEM IN 3 WORDS? Josh- Funny,Unique,Determind Jay- Perfectionist, Creative, Diligent Sherm- Teacher, Ninja, Republican Ryan- Funny, Horticulturist, Milo Alyson- Talented, Logical, Motivated
YOU ALL COME FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND SOME ARE STILL DOING OTHER PROJECTS. HOW DO YOU MANAGE DGDSN AND THE OTHER PROJECTS? Very carefully with much help from calendars and Facebook chat
WHO CAME UP WITH THE BAND NAME AND SINCE YOU NAMED THE BAND HAS YOUR SENSE OF THE NAME CHANGED IN ANYWAY? Jay and I did, we were drunk and talking about how some guy was so desperate he'd probably rape a dead girl, I said, "I don't think it can be called rape because Dead Girls Don't Say No" Jay then said that would a great band name So I said okay then we have a name. Something like that. For me, there hasn't been and change in the sense of the name as it never had much original meaning to me. People remember it, which is what matters to me. There are some who are offended by it, but they are looking for too much into it to find offense because it's nothing more than a title. Consider us an audio horror movie and that's our title. We are not promoting rape culture or misogyny like we have been accused of by any means.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR DGDSN? My goals for DGDSN are to constantly improve as a band, record, and travel to as many places as we can be playing gigs and hopefully entertain the crowd as we do so.
HOW DID YOU FIND ALYSON HELL IN 2015? WHAT EXPERIENCE DOES SHE BRING TO THE BAND? Jason and Alyson met at Fleet's Festival of Freaks in September of 2015. Both our bands played that festival, and that was Alyson's first time seeing DEAD GIRLS DON'T SAY NO.. I loved them; they put on a very energetic set. It was impressive to me that Josh was singing and playing guitar at the same time. . I have very little prior experience. I was in my first rock band for just over a year . We needed a second vocalist, preferably female for our song KINGDOM OF DECAY. We all saw her sing a song with Kip Winger when he did an acoustic gig in RI. We then saw her perform with her old band, Reign of the Last. In both instances, her voice was great but not something that would work with what we do, but decided to ask her to do Kingdom with us anyway. We gave her a copy of the music and she came to practice and nailed it, her voice was powerful and unexpected. That night she ended up leaving her band for personal reasons and we asked her if she wanted to join asap before someone else scooped her up.
KINGDOM OF DECAY was just released in January; how does that feel to have your first album out in the public for listeners to hear? It feels great, we were on the cusp of releasing it earlier, but we lost a good friend and legend in Joe Moody who passed away suddenly while we were nearly finished with our album. Our recordings were stuck in legal limbo we went elsewhere to New Alliance Studio in Cambridge and recorded there. I am very pleased with KoD, but am really looking forward to recording newer material now that we have grown as a complete band with Alyson.
IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE SONG OFF THE DISC THAT BEST REPRESENTS THE BAND WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I would go with "HATE" None of the songs really describe the band as a whole, but I feel the energy of the song represents the energy we have for playing music.
WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE HAVE YOU GOTTEN FROM FANS/ OTHER MUSIC LOVERS IN THE PROVIDENCE AREA? Mostly positive and encouraging. Though a group of SJW's aren't very fond of our name.
HOW HAS THE PROVIDENCE AND NEW ENGLAND METAL SCENE INSPIRED YOU GUYS AS MUSICIANS? Talent with many of the bands I have seen always inspire us to try to up our game as a band. There are a lot of great bands in our area of all different styles.
WHAT DO YOU WISH IF ANYTHING WOULD CHANGE OR EVEN GET BETTER IN THE SCENE? The competition between promoters and venues. It is a constant issue to where there are multiple shows of similar styles of music on the same night. This makes it difficult to see all bands and also splits the crowd into smaller groups. If the spread the shows out, there would be a show to go to almost every weekend and the crowds would be bigger and would benefit the bands, fans, venues, promoters, pretty much everyone all around.
IN MAY YOU GOT YOUR 1000 LIKE ON FACEBOOK, DO YOU THINK IT EASIER TO CONNECT WITH THE WORLD THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA OR WOULD YOU RATHER CONNECT AT SHOWS? Social Media is a great tool to connect with people, especially outside of our area. Nothing beats meeting new people in person though and having them tell you personally that they love your music and come back repeatedly to see us perform. \
IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOUR LIVE SHOW AS A MOVIE TITLE WHAT MOVIE WOULD YOU PICK? Tough one, The Unexpected, but honestly couldn't think of anything for this question.
WHAT DOES THE SUMMER AND INTO FALL LOOK FOR YOU GUYS FOR PLAYING SHOWS ETC? We have nothing else booked till November so we will be working on new material for our next album.
