ANOTHER SOCIETY; ONE LAST SHOW! BY: Stephanie Stevens
I started the ROMPER in 1994, I started this little magazine on my kitchen floor cutting and pasting together stories. I went from record shop to record shop, show to show giving out copies of this little handmade magazine I made on my kitchen floor every month. It used to just feature local bands from the area or if I was cool enough I would get some locals from other states that would send me stuff. But that is how I started this little magazine. And it was an adventure and a journey and when I think back to the memories (and boy I had a lot) I realize in the last year or so a lot of the people I met through doing this hobby of mine have come back into my life be it just as friends or with other bands or music thanks to social media.
That’s where my newest interview and article comes from ANOTHER SOCIETY a band I heard out back in 1995, the radio station here in Boston area was jamming this bands record LAST STEP like it was the word of god. They pumped this little band from Mississippi up like no other. The band was on an upstart label called PC! Music Company and was one label that was giving the Romper a chance to feature the artists on the label, so when I heard ANOTHER SOCIETY was on their way to play a Radio station show in the area I knew I had to get my hands-on tickets. SO, with full press pass in hand I drive to the venue and that is where I met the one and only Luke John (just in his teens) and had the world at his feet with his long hair and guitar in hand he was ready to show the New England scene what ANOTHER SOCIETY was about. That night was so much fun not only was he a cool humbled guy but the rest of the band Daryl Stephens-drums, Jason” Huck” Huckabyand and Jim Koester-guitars and Brad Grubbs-bass were even more inviting and down to earth. After that night, I was a fan and followed this band.
They had success also with the next album BLOOD WRONG (1997) and was able to catch a show or two on that touring cycle; the band might have had a few lineup changes but Luke John never changed his humble ness and drive to make music for the people, just real rock and relatable to the core.
I lost touch with Luke for a bit but in the past year we were re- connected and I am happy to see these guys are getting together one last time, to bring back the ANOTHER SOCIETY of the nineties to show fans, music lovers how much they thank us for being us and supporting the band since the beginning. So, I am honored and kind of teary eyed to say this is it kids, the final show
ANOTHER SOCIETY rocked stages across the country from 1995-2001 with bands like Faith No More, Staind, Godsmack & many more. Now, the boys are back together and ready to melt faces for ONE LAST SHOW! I was able to get some questions out to Luke about the upcoming show and how he views the music industry these days, maybe a future for ANOTHER SOCIETY and some solo stuff from him. So, read on
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PUT THIS REUNION SHOW TOGETHER FOR ANOTHER SOCIETY?
I had a lot of people asking about it. Daryl and I got together and talked about it, and decided to do it.
WILL IT BE ALL ORGINAL MEMBERS AND IF IT IS HOW DID THE COVERSATION GO ABOUT DOING THE SHOW IN THE FIRST PLACE? Brad and Jason weren’t able to commit but Ed And Rudy were in the group and played and recorded all of the music after BLOOD WRONG with us.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT EACH ONE YOU HAVE MISSED THE MOST? I missed those guys every day. Touring makes you close to your bandmates. You become a family, and you miss your brothers when you don’t see them.
WHERE, WHEN AND HOW CAN PEOPLE GET TICKETS FOR THIS SHOW COMING UP? All of the info is on the Another Society facebook. August 25th here in Memphis!
SINCE YOU BEEN BACK PRACTICING TO GET READY FOR THE SHOW HAS THERE BEEN TALK OR POSSIBLE WORKINGS FOR MAYBE MORE THEN JUST THE SHOW LIKE A NEW RECORD OR TRACKS?
We don’t have plans for a new record. I’ll never rule it out, but after 20 years it would probably sound a little different than the other records! Lol. We are definitely open to coming and doing a show for you guys on the East Coast. GOING INTO THE ARCHIVES OF ANOTHER SOCIETY MUSIC HOW HAS THAT AFFECTED YOU EMOTIONALLY NOW VS. WHEN YOU FIRST WROTE THEM? A lot of emotions came out in the first few rehearsals. We haven’t played those tunes for a long time. lots of high fives and fist bumps going around! lol
LOST WAS ALWAYS A FAVORITE OF MINE HOW DO YOU RELATE TO THOSE LYRICS NOW THAT IT HAS BEEN A WHILE SINCE YOU WROTE THEM? Wow, Lost. that’s one I never played live. such a personal track for me. The lyrics and the meaning behind that song will always remain true for me. You guys just might hear that one at the show. ;)
LAST STEP BROUGHT YOU SOME GREAT SUCCESS AND PROBABLY THE BEST MEMORIES OF YOUR TOURING CAREER OR MUSIC CAREER WHAT IS YOUR FINDEST MEMORY OF THOSE DAYS?
It did and BLOOD WRONG too. So many memories, Steph. Met you at Axis that first time we were up! I couldn’t pin one memory down as my favorite. We met, played and toured with bands we were fans of and that was amazing. played big shows and lived the life. But meeting the people who were touched by the music was always my favorite. We are Fortunate for every single day we got to do it.
OTHER THEN JUMPING OUT OF PLANES WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TOO AND WILL WE HEAR SOME SOLO STUFF FROM YOU?
Ha! skydiving changed my life! Yes, I’m working on a solo record at the moment. Its acoustic forward but still has some rock in it. You can follow the Luke John Music page for updates and info about that.
HOW DO YOU VIEW THE MUSIC INDUSTRY NOW VS. THEN?
I wish You Tube was around in the 90’s lol It’s not about the sound scan report anymore, it’s all about how many likes you get. technology is great and makes it really easy and inexpensive to record a great sounding record, and you can release it for free. Self-promotion is key now more than ever.
ARE YOU LISTENING TO ANYTHING NEW WE SHOULD KEEP OUR EARS PEEELED FOR? (NEW BANDS, MUSICIANS ETC)
Nothing But Thieves is a great band! Royal Blood too. lots of good music still coming out thankfully!
IF YOU HAD TO DO THE BAND THING ALL OVER AGAIN WOULD YOU DO IT AND WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR PAST?
Of course, I would do it again. I would tweak a few details :)
We are stoked about this Last show. We wanted to give one more thing for the fans who have supported and still support us. The Response has been amazing and humbling. We are going to do it big, so if you can get to the show, get there!!
