ANOTHER LOST YEAR is doing very well for themselves in the active rock market and touring the hell out of the U.S. The band comes from Charlotte, NC and have a growing nation of fans. They have a up n coming album releasing this year and are letting rock fans a taste of it with the new single entitled “WOLVES”, it looks like this band has a very steady and growing career ahead of them. I had a chance to catch up with the very comedic and charismatic lead vocalist and guitarist Clinton Cunanan. Enjoy the interview, the band’s music and hit up a live show if these guys come around, worth every penny!
ANOTHER LOST YEAR WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND THE BAND NAME AND WHO CAME UP WTH IT? Have you ever woke up in a strange basement surrounded by boxes? That moment of sheer confusion is where it comes from…. haha I was actually in the US Army and I was “losing” years of music, at the time I didn’t know it, but after the fact I realized I wasn’t getting any younger looking. Your brain remembers things in series of 3’s, and it starts with the letter “A”, plus it’s fun to say to drunk people.
INTRODUCE YOUR BAND MEMBERS AND WHAT THEY BRING TO THE BANDS SOUND? Ringo, he wrote a song…. Adam Hall from the huge town of South Point, OH, him and I are the original gangsters, he's a little less gangster in some areas and more in other. He started out as the plaid wearing guy and rhythm guitar he picked up the slack on lead when our other duder stepped down, and went to bass when the other duder stepped down, Nate or Gus is from Lincoln County, he likes to wear g strings and skinny jeans, we also went to high school together and formed an allegiance against evil doers. He also beats the skins, and probably skin too. Jorge is from the metropolis known as Peru, when he was like a month old. He currently resides in a van, randomly showers monthly and wears shiny shoes. He will definitely end up on some version of Guitar Hero. He's that friggin good. And me, well I just have a watch obsession.
CLINTON, RUMOR HAS IT YOU WERE ASKED TO TRY OUT FOR EVANS BLUE IS THAT TRUE AND IF SO HOW DID THAT COME UP AND WHAT DID YOU TAKE FROM THAT EXPERIENCE TO BRING INTO ANOTHER LOST YEAR? Tis true, and it was pretty sweet, I imagine it would have been much different if it was now, much like the STP auditions, Parker would send some tracks over, I would record my sweet angelic vocals on them and get rejected. Life is a process, ups and downs, yes’s and no’s, X’s and O’s, ohhhh they haunt me, wait.
ACTIVE ROCK RADIO SEEMS TO LOVE YOU GUYS WHICH IS AWESOME, WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS ABOUT YOUR SONGWRITING AND SOUND THAT ATTRACTS THAT ATTENTION TO YOU GUYS? Major disseverance here, a few stations do, we’re not heavy enough to be actually considered ACTIVE, and we’re too heavy for alternative. At the end of the day, we are ROCK, REAL music, call it what you want, I call it reality. I have been the go to guy, the guy in the wrong, the good guy, the bad guy, the guy with the money and the guy without, I have loved and lost, I have had an extremely nice home and I have been 100% homeless, I don't need to make up stories to tell, I lived them, and that’s what people gravitate towards, at least I think that’s what they gravitate towards.
WHAT IS THE BANDS BIGGEST INFLUENCES FROM THE PAST ROCK SCENE AND THE CURRENT? Chris Gaines, I really liked how he looked like Garth Brooks. Honestly, the influences we pull from aren’t performance wise musically, its work ethic that we see. Grinding, always grinding is what influences us. WHERE DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE A GREATER STRENGTH IN YOUR SONGWRITING OR YOUR STUDIO TIME OR STAGE ABILITY? All of the above. Come see a show, listen to our album, and listen to the songs… its art, you can’t pick it up and hold it, but it will carry you through.
IN 2014 YOU GUYS RELEASED A EP,THE REVOLUTION PT.1 THE OTHER SIDE, JUST CURIOUS WHY IS WAS JUST A EP AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE OVERALL FEEL OF THE EP FOR PEOPLE NOT FAMILIAR TO THE BAND ( I ADORE THE TRACK WE ARE THE CHOSEN) The second half that comes out this month will clear the air, it was a change, and the revolution is only beginning. We have 2 EP’s out currently and one full length, a second EP coming this month and another full length in the summer, each collection of songs is different, pieces in time, the things we were going through at the time.
A OLDER SONG I ADORE ALSO IS WAR ON THE INSIDE FROM YOUR ALBUM BETTER DAYS DO YOU GUYS STILL GET EXCITED TO PLAY THAT SONG WHEN YOUR TOURING AND HAVE YOU CHANGED IT UP LIVE TO GIVE IT NEW LIFE? Adam and I have played that song together at least 1200 times, and it never gets old, we are constantly evolving the song, moving it around in the set, It’s really fun to move around and do differently, people don't expect that. I also change the words periodically, from all these voices calling my name to all these horses out on the range….
WITH 2016 LOOKING PRIME FOR YOU GUYS I HEAR A NEW ALBUM IS DROPPING, CAN YOU GIVE US A SNEAL PEAK ABOUT THE OVERALL THEME OF THE RECORD? I HEARD ITS NAME IS ALIEN ARCHITECT, A UNIQUE NAME WHAT IS THAT ALBUM TITLE ABOUT? You’re curious now, it describes us perfectly, unique and from somewhere else haha, I couldn't be more excited about it, I co-produced it with Jose Urquiza, and it was the most liberating experience ever, I’m proud of all the dudes, it was the first time we handled it all from beginning to end, and it gave us a new found freedom, a freedom I think you'll hear in the tunes. The idea was for you to see it on the shelf, and automatically be drawn in, and I really think we captured that visually and sonically. WOLVES YOU JUST RELEASED AS A SNEAK PEAK HOW WAS THE VIDEO SHOOT AND DID YOU LIKE THE OUTCOME OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT? DO YOU FEEL VIDEOS STILL HELP BANDS OUT TREMENDOUSLY? Considering it was a good buddy of mine who happens to drive racecars in his spare time and myself shooting the video, I am very pleased with it, it was my first real production video that I directed, we spent hours on lighting, and hundreds of dollars, it took me some time to do the editing, but again I think you can tell it has that freedom in it, and a real organic feel. VOCALLY ON THE NEW ALBUM DID YOU CHANGE ANYTHING OR HAVE ANY VOCAL COACHING CAUSE ON WOLVES IT SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE A MORE POWERFUL LOWER RANGE OR I MIGH JUST IMAGINING THINGS LOL? IT JUST SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE GOTTEN STRONG AS A SINGER I found my voice, I keep talking about this freedom, and with Jose, I felt like I could do anything, he really pushed me to believe in myself. Plus; playing about a million shows, I have every night basically to refine my craft, and I sing in the car a lot haha, Adam and myself have started really working on vocal stretches and warming up, something we never did prior to last year, and you can absolutely tell. I amactively seeking a vocal coach though. Fact. ARE YOU GUYS DOING A PRE ORDER FOR THE NEW DISC AND WILL THAT START AND WILL ANY EXTRA GOODIES BE COMING WITH IT? We are definitely going to pre order, you'll get the Revolution pt 2, Long Way Home for free digitally with it! IS IT TRUE GOING INTO THE SONGWRITING FOR THIS NEW DISC YOU HAD 8 SONGS WRITTEN ALREADY AND AT THE END 25 TRACKS? HOW DID YOU CUT THEM DOWN FOR THE DISC AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE REST? These are facts, you have done a little homework, I like, I like a lot, yessss. And honestly we didn't cut much, and we have since recorded more. We just have this huge surplus of songs sitting and waiting now…. and it’s an incredible feeling. WHATS GOING ON WITH YOU GUYS CURRENTLY IN THE ROAD LIFE DEPARTMENT? Always roading it you know, we’re preparing for the summer grind. We toured Better Days and Rev pt 1 for 4 years, here’s to the next 4! WILL THERE BE A RECORD RELASE PARTY AND IF SO WHEN AND WHERE? Not many details as of now, other than yes. And I have been for the last few weeks back and forth with the tea about some of my ideas about the release, if it all comes to fruition it will definitely be one to be remembered BEST PART ABOUT TOUR LIFE? AND WORST PART? We get to live a dream, and that’s the absolute best part, the worst part, missing everything back home with loved ones, not being able to cook in your kitchen, sleep in your bed, things you take for granted all the time. AS A PANTHERS FAN HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS YEARS SUPERBOWL AND ARE YOU HAPPY FOR PEYTON MANNING? We were Panther fans before (Nate and myself, the others by default too) and we still are, we are attached to their super bowl 50 season, they used Wolves for their hype video, so it was awesome to be a part of that, and as far as Peyton, I also am a UT fan, so I’m covered. WHAT DO YOU WANT ANOTHER LOST YEAR TO BE REMEMBERED FOR WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE? Bringing people together and writing the songs of our time, ambitious I know, but whatever it takes, we all have dreams right. Thanks for taking the time to interrogate me.
